“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God . . .” (Matthew 5:8)
The first step to tripling our youth group in 13 months was internal, not external. God cares about our hearts and intent more than results alone. In other words, God not only cares about WHAT we do, but WHY we do it.
To say it another way, your heart must be about the mission, not about the position. (I’ll talk more about this in a future post.) Jesus said it like this, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Jesus is saying focus on the kingdom — God’s mission — and everything you need will be provided for you to accomplish it. This is a promise spoken from the very mouth of Jesus. If you are desiring to see that God’s will — his kingdom — is advanced in the hearts of young people, then you will be given everything you need to accomplish it. We have to believe this — heart & soul — if we are going to see the “impossible” become possible. (If we are going to see floods of lost students saved and discipled.)
Jesus makes it clear, “. . . If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). We can’t “bear much fruit” unless we stick close to Jesus. When we hang around Jesus, his Word and his people, we get his heart. We become like-hearted. We become “pure in heart” and “will see God” move in a “much fruit” kind of way.
The Bible says, “The Lord is not . . . willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). God wants every teen in your area to know him. Without a doubt, it is his desire to double, triple, quadruple (and beyond) the size of your youth group.
The first step we must take to see this transpire is to draw near to Jesus, get his heart and discover his mission for us and our community. So let’s take a moment and draw nearer now. I have included the following prayer as a guide. Please feel free to use it, if you’d like.
Father, purify my heart so I can see you more clearly. My desire is to do your will and to see your kingdom’s mission advanced through my life. I want to see you move in the lives of young people in an amazing way. I want to see a youth movement in my area, but before — amaze me again — and move in me now. As I am drawing near to you, I know you are drawing nearer to me. I want to remain in you, so I may bear much fruit. Without you, I can do nothing. With you, I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. I give you my heart, purify it; I give you my mind, renew it; I give you my body, use it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
“Come near to God and he will come near to you . . .” (James 4:8)
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” (Phillipians 4:13)
